Power of the Patient Project

From July 2022 until May 2023, I worked as a Senior Segment Anchor for the Power of the Patient Project: The National Library of Patient Rights and Advocacy.

As a Senior Segment Anchor, I hosted a new segment called, Tell Us Your Story where I researched the guests, wrote interview questions and conducted two to four interviews with medical professionals and patients who want to share their medical stories.

An Interview with Dr. Marianne Miller

Dr. Marianne Miller is an expert eating disorder therapist and binge eating consultant who is currently serving the San Diego area. She has been a psychotherapist for 25 years and has been treating eating disorders for over 10 years. Dr. Miller provides therapy and specialized training in treating adults and teens who are struggling with their relationship with food and/or body image issues. She has compassion for those who are struggling because she’s been in their shoes as she is recovered from binge eating. 

An Interview with Anna Penenberg

Anna Penenberg integrates neurobiology, psychotherapy, and wisdom traditions into her work with families and individuals affected by trauma. She is also a single mother of two whose life changed when her youngest daughter, Dana who was 16 years old at the time, became very ill. This was the start of the mother and daughter’s medical journey together. After 4 years of waiting, Dana was eventually diagnosed with Lyme disease. Ms. Penenberg released a memoir, Dancing in the Narrows: A Mother-Daughter Odyssey Through Chronic Illness.

An Interview with Amy Taklif

Amy Taklif is a wife, mother, and social worker who has cared for and worked with people with disabilities for years. She has a passion for bringing awareness to people with disabilities and strongly advocates for them, especially in medical situations. Mrs. Taklif became even more involved with people with disabilities when she was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS in November of 2009. Her prior knowledge and work have helped her understand her own disability and not fear it. 

An Interview with Donna O'Donnell Figurski 

Donna O'Donnell Figurski is an author, radio show host, speaker, and advocate for those with traumatic brain injuries. She also is the caregiver of her husband, David, who experienced a traumatic brain injury in 2005. Since then, Mrs. Figurski has created her own blog, Surviving Traumatic Brain Injury, where she interviews both caregivers and survivors of brain injuries. She also hosts a radio show that airs live and is archived as a podcast. And she has written a book called, Prisoners without Bars: A Caregiver's Tale.

An Interview with Stephanie Germino

Stephanie Germino is a social media personality, well-known to her many followers. She is also a carrier of the BRCA1 gene mutation, a mutation that is linked to a higher risk of developing breast cancer. Knowing that breast cancer has been diagnosed in members of her family, at a young age, she opted to have a double mastectomy after testing positive for the BRCA1. She also opted not to undergo reconstructive surgery.

An Interview with Dawn Corbelli

Dawn Corbelli's life was changed 14 years ago after getting into a car accident with her daughter, Veronica, who was just 15 years old at the time. Since their accident, Mrs. Corbelli has become a caregiver to Veronica and a mental health advocate raising awareness and educating others about traumatic brain injuries. Mrs. Corbelli also recently released a memoir, A Miracle a Day, One Day at a Time: Hope After Traumatic Brain Injury, that details their journey to recovery after the life-altering accident.

Lousin Mehrabi is a world-renowned professional negotiator, trainer, and inspirational speaker. Aside from being one of the most influential negotiation professionals, she is the mother of Alex, 11 years old, who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy also known as DMD.  Mrs. Mehrabi shares the medical journey she and her family have been on.

An Interview with Dr. Chris Johnston

Dr. Chris Johnston, Chief Medical Officer of Pinnacle Treatment Centers shares an informative interview about addiction & recovery. His goal has been to incorporate the most effective medication–assisted services across the full spectrum of levels of care and ensure nurses and prescribers are following evidence-based procedures. 

An Interview with Diane Pinder

Diane Pinder, R.N. has been a nurse researcher in oncology at Duke University for the last 6 years. She is also the wife of Bob Koshinskie, one of our earlier guests. Bob is currently battling pancreatic cancer. In this moving and informative segmen, Diane discusses her work at Duke, and the emotional transitions she has had to make from oncology nurse to the wife of a pancreatic cancer patient.

An Interview with Robert Koshinskie

Robert Koshinskie is a patient coping with pancreatic cancer. In this candid and open interview, Bob discusses his battle with pancreatic cancer and his book, One Path Amond Many, which details the disease from a patient's perspective.  It’s with a heavy heart that we share the news that Bob has passed away.
